Beyond the Break

SANS, the Surfing Association of Nova Scotia, has launched a quarterly newsletter called "Beyond the Break." The Spring 2011 issue is online here, and it's well worth a read for anyone interested in the Atlantic surf scene. The content includes regional surf reports and surf news, profiles of local surfers and some nice snaps from the winter season. As a bit of a surf history geek, I was also pretty stoked to see a few photos of Gary Tomada surfing Cape Breton back in the '60s.

Michael Darling in Indo

School holidays in Sumbawa? Sounds pretty okay to us. Michael Darling hooked up a trip to Indonesia recently, and he sent a few snaps along with this email from his trip:

"My name is Michael Lee Darling. I'm 16 years of age. I was born in Vancouver and have been traveling back and forth between here and Tofino for my whole life. (Tofino is definitely way better.) I have been surfing since I was about 8 or 9, and currently I ride for Storm Surf Shop and Sitka Surfboards. The most recent surf trip I was on was to Lakey Peak on Sumbawa in Indonesia. Probably my best surf trip so far and I will definitely consider going back. It took us around 20 hours travel time to get there, but it was for sure worth it! I stayed in Sumbawa for 13 days and it was the best surf I have ever experienced. Indo surf helps inprove your surfing so much—you notice the difference after the first couple of days. But when I was there I did miss surfing with my friends in Tofino."

Beach Clean at Lawrencetown

Some of the more civic-minded folks of the Eastern Shore gathered at Lawrencetown Beach this weekend for a pre-season beach cleanup sponsored by Ocean Minded. The shoreline of Nova Scotia's busiest surf break is looking a lot better after the crew hauled several hundred pounds of garbage off the sand. Nico Manos sent this email about it yesterday:

"This was the crowd and garbage that showed up for the Lawrencetown beach cleanup. Scotty Sherin was nice enough to fill an industrial garbage bag, take some pics and edit a few photos for us. There were over 40 who showed up and we collected 380 pounds of garbage."

Good karma for sure...

Five Surfers & Seven Ghosts

The most recent segment of Rip Curl's Tip 2 Tip adventure through Indonesia found Bruno Santos, Dean Brady, Tyler Larronde, Oney Anwar and Tom Curren surfing a tidal bore known by the locals as Seven Ghosts. On the Tip 2 Tip site, Curren claims it as "the most amazing Search trip in 20 years." The full edit will be available for free at ripcurl.com on April 11th, but for now you can check out this two-minute teaser clip. I'm definitely stoked for the long version, but this teaser in itself is incredible—this place should've been on BBC's Planet Earth, and the image at 1:14 looks like it could be some fantasy surf piece by Wolfgang Bloch. This sort of thing is surfing at its best—the sport helping remind us how astonishing our world really is.
